Parents who go through a divorce usually establish a parenting time agreement. This outlines how both parties plan to raise their child together, but separately. In doing so, they often designate which holidays they will get to spend with their child each year. This can include Halloween. Continue reading below to learn more about how to handle these matters and contact an experienced New York family law attorney for guidance.

Tips for Sharing Custody on Halloween

The holidays are times when parents can make memories with their children. It is because of this that parents often want to spend Halloween with them. However, divorce parents may not have the luxury of doing so every year. If parents are unable to agree regarding how to take care of their arrangements, there are ways to handle the matter that can work for both parties. This can include:

  • Sharing the night. If parents can agree to it, it is possible for them to split the night into shifts. This allows them both to take part in Halloween with their child. On the other hand, they also may be able to put aside their differences to spend the night together.
  • Other Halloween events. The days and weeks leading up to Halloween often include a variety of activities that families can participate in. If one parent does not have parenting time on Halloween, they can take them to other events such as pumpkin patches, early trick-or-treating events, fall activities, etc.
  • Alternate years. Parents are not always able to split the night of Halloween with a co-parent. Instead, they may be able to switch on and off every year instead. Doing so allows each parent the chance to spend this time with their child, even if it is not every year.
  • Adult parties. There are many adults who dress up and participate in Halloween as well. Oftentimes, these celebrations include alcohol. During this time, it is important to be cautious of behavior and posting on social media because it can possibly damage a custody agreement.
